Songwriting has always been a cathartic way to chronicle my feelings and emotions, often as they pertain to relationships. With 2020 marking my biggest relationship milestone yet—marriage—I recorded this collection of songs to commemorate and reflect on the pivotal moments that brought me this far.
Of all the beautiful trees here in the Pacific Northwest, the Coast Salish Indians regard the Arbutus, or Madrone, as the most sacred tree. Legend tells of a great flood in which a steadfast Madrone tree acted as an anchor for Salish canoes, keeping them safe and tethered throughout the storm. To this day, the Salish People do not use Madrone trees for firewood, as a showing of respect and gratitude for the sanctuary and refuge that the Madrone provided long ago.
Along with being revered as symbols of protection and safety, Madrone trees also symbolize knowledge, depth, integrity, balance, and strength. Their relentlessness to find their way to the sunlight by any means necessary, be it twisting, shedding, or bending, displays lifelong dedication and commitment, even in the face of challenges and obstacles.
May we always strive to find our way to the light.
